1996

After a quiet start, 1996 turned into another globe-trotting year. Phil travelled to Cairo, Belgium, Germany, Uzbekistan, Kazakstan, Holland, Japan and Eire. Together we made a weekend in Exeter, and a late spring trip to the land of leprechauns with Tom and Sylvia, before our grand expedition to Nord Kapp.
Eire:

A week-long tour from Cork around the southwest, and finally across as far as Waterford and its Crystal factory before returning to Cork. Taking in the way; narrow mountain roads, bed and breakfasts, barbecues and beer (well it was mostly wine, but that didn't rhyme) - So much for alliteration, there was no precipitation - which surprised the locals.
Nord Kapp:
The trip began with the ferry crossing to Göteborg, where we met up with our Swedish friend,
Ulf, before heading north through Gävle and Umeå. Then inland to stop in Jokkmok, the Lapp
(Same) heritage centre, before heading north again to the Finnish border at Karesuando, where we
met a Dutch cyclist on his way from Amsterdam to the North Cape. A short stretch of Finland,
and then we were on our way to the top of Europe, up the Norwegian coast from Skibotn through
Alta to Nord Kapp.
The scenery was barren moorland, with reindeer herds and snow patches. Villages had fish drying
on frames in the air, and it never got dark.
From Nord Kapp, accessed by ferry as the bridge is not yet complete, we came south to the
university city of Tromsø, last resting place of the Bismark, and home to the Polar
planetarium.
Here we took an unscheduled tour to the beautiful Lofoten and Vesterålen islands with their
steep misty mountainsides, seabirds and Viking history.
Then back to Tromsø, where we met the cyclist again, before setting off on the 2000km journey south which we did in 34 hours:-
Across the Artic Circle, and back into Sweden along the blå vägen (blue road); a beautiful route of mountains and lakes.
Finally on to Göteborg, to be reintroduced to darkness for the first time in more than two weeks. A truly unforgettable trip!
