The Maxus Conversion

After many years of Camping around Scandinavia- by Train and then Car, we decided to design our own Motorcaravan; which could also replace our Range Rover Ambulance in transporting Model Railway layouts to shows - providing luxury accommodation at the same time.

SubSections
This is a new section which is unlikely to any more appear before Christmas Day.
After a 'Test Run' to Hamburg (Miniatur Wunderland) and Dortmund (Intermodellbau) at Easter, via the Tunnel
it has just returned from a successful 3,500 mile holiday trip to Nord Kapp (Norway) via Denmark, Sweden and Finland:...

Choices
We had looked around at many commercial examples but found only one approaching our needs with rear door access. Iff we were to leave the van in Sweden, we would have opted for a larger, integrated, or cab/chassis Lefthand drive model. However we did not consider these suitable for the narrower Devon lanes which the van would have to negotiate when in the UK.

The decision was therefore to use a Panel Van: but that could be a low roof which could go in the garage or Supermarket Car Park, or a high roof which couldn't: An elevating roof was not considered as a viable option.

Various options were considered, but a 1000 mile ex-demonstrator Maxus lwb XHR was chosen as fitting our drive, and other requirements.
Delivered the day they entered Administration. The conversion has met the requirements of the DVLA for re-classification as a 'Motor Caravan'.

GAS FREE:
A key aspect to the design was to be NO GAS or LPG (or Petrol)- avoiding the problems of carrying these fuels on ferries or in tunnels.
Solar Foils on the Roof provide enough power for self-sufficiency each day to run the all-Electric kitchen and LED lighting.
Optima batteries then provide the storage for the 3kW Tru-Sinewave 230Vac allowing 'standard' domestic appliances to be used at affordable cost.
Heating is provided by Eberspacher Diesel Combitronic. There is no on-board Diesel generator as they are too large, heavy and expensive.
